Dry eyes natural remedies

Dry Eyes Natural Remedies – Our eyes need moisture supply and shielding to function properly. Dry eyes is a common phenomenon that harms the quality of life of many people in society, this phenomenon can have many causes and the treatment that will be adjusted to the source of the problem by a doctor, can range from treating dry eyes with natural medicines, local treatment with drops, to surgical or semi-surgical procedures.

To perform their function, the tears are secreted regularly and continuously with each blink from the lacrimal glands which are found mainly on the outer part of the upper eyelid and small glands which are scattered on the conjunctiva.

The tear consists of a cocktail containing water that hydrates the eye and washes it of external particles, lipids that shield the eye and contribute to its smooth movement and are important in addition to preventing too rapid evaporation of the tear, and mucus that forms a kind of matrix that holds the components of the tear and spreads them uniformly on the surface of the eye. In addition, there are special proteins of the immune system – antibodies, which fight potential infections in the eye.

A condition of dry eyes is extremely common, and can express a failure in one of the above systems, in addition, as part of the aging process, the tear production process slows down, and the eye has a poor supply of tears quantitatively.

On the other hand, if we have a problem with one of the glands that produces a certain component in the tear, we will have a problem with the quality of the tear that will not be able to perform its function, for example when there is a problem with the production of the fatty component of the tear, the watery liquid in it will evaporate quickly and will not stay long enough on the surface of the eye.

In both cases the result will be dry eye syndrome.

If you suffer from dry eyes, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  1. itching sensation
  2. Burning sensation in the eyes
  3. Foreign body sensation in the eye
  4. redness
  5. Blurred vision
  6. Excess tear (paradoxically may indicate dry eye, as a result of the irritation caused by the shield)

There are several reasons that can cause dry eyes: old age, certain medications, intraocular diseases, systemic diseases, environmental causes, contact lenses, allergies.

A diagnosis of dry eyes is made by a doctor and determined based on the description of the patient's symptoms and an inquiry into the cause of the dryness, whether it is an ocular or systemic disease or whether it is an environmental cause. After the diagnosis, the doctor will ask for various tests aimed at understanding the source of the dryness in order to adapt an exact solution to the cause of the problem.

And how do we treat dry eyes? In many cases, the treatment is to relieve and dampen the symptoms until the source of the medical problem, if any, is found.

In many cases, relief for dry eyes can be found with the help of natural remedies and environmental changes and lifestyle changes, for example, avoiding spending a long time in air conditioning and dry spaces, going outside on a day with strong winds, avoiding prolonged viewing of screens and of course quitting smoking.

Natural remedies for dry eyes can be based on omega 3, which is a fatty acid necessary for our bodies and which we cannot produce naturally in the body but consume it from external sources. This fatty acid is known according to studies to reduce inflammation, and can increase the amount and quality of tears produced.

Omega 3 can be consumed through food rich in this fatty acid such as palm oil, soybean oil, kia seeds, nuts, fish, or alternatively take omega 3 food supplements at a pharmacy.

Another natural remedy for dry eyes can be natural eye drops that mimic the composition of human tears, or lubricating oils of various kinds that provide somewhat longer-term relief and are of course suitable for use on the eye. It is important to note that the use of oils provides longer relief, but may blur the vision while the substance is on the eye, so it is recommended to use it mainly before bed and in drops during the day.

In the above cases, these are treatments that do not require a doctor's prescription and provide temporary relief from dry eye symptoms, we actually replace or temporarily support the insufficient tear production in our bodies and help it with the help of natural fluids that provide the same moisture and shielding that our tears provide.

Besides eye drops, another treatment if the conservative treatment has not succeeded and the problem remains, can be blocking the drainage system of the tears from the eye towards the nose, so that instead of adding external "tears" in the drops, the action time and the stay of the existing tears on the eyeball are increased

So far we have discussed the treatment to alleviate the symptoms of dry eye, if there is a suspicion of a local or systemic eye disease that also affects the eye, the source of the disease must be treated and specific treatments for dry eye adjusted after diagnosing the exact cause of dry eyes.
