The American Diabetes Association focuses on eye health

American Diabetes Association – Consultants, ophthalmologists, optometrists, endocrinologists and people with eye diseases have joined together to raise awareness of diabetes-related eye diseases.

In order to raise awareness, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) led a virtual event regarding eye health. The initiative known as "Focus on Diabetes" was launched as part of the American Diabetes Association's public health campaign, with the goal of improving the consistent care of people with diabetes.

Three main goals

The event, which was broadcast virtually, had three main goals:

  1. Increasing awareness of diabetes-related eye diseases
  2. Increasing education and support for people with diabetes
  3. Studying and teaching health professionals in the context of eye diseases

The event was attended by professionals and experts from various fields of ophthalmology: optometrists, ophthalmologists, endocrinologists, experts from the Diabetes Association and others involved in the community.

The importance of a comprehensive eye examination

A comprehensive eye exam is the gold standard in healthcare. The test makes it possible to reduce the negative effects of a disease that threatens vision and also provides an opportunity to improve general health. Beyond the detection of eye diseases and general conditions, comprehensive eye examinations can detect more than 270 conditions, including diabetes – and in many cases also diseases that the person does not even know they have.

Performing tests early can help to identify and, accordingly, treat diseases, before they lead to vision loss. According to Dr. Raj Mathuri, an ophthalmologist from the American Society of Retinal Specialists, an eye exam is the first step on the road to a healthy eye health.

Each of us needs good and accurate vision in order to function regularly in this world and without interruptions. Therefore, a comprehensive eye examination is the way to maintain health and to create a permanent state of solid eye health. A comprehensive eye examination prevents advanced diseases and thereby – prevents huge expenses on surgeries, expensive and advanced treatments and more.

Who should perform the test?

While optometrists can only perform a general examination, an ophthalmologist can give a comprehensive answer based on comprehensive scientific data as well as the use of appropriate equipment. The examination at an optometrist is only superficial and refers only to visual impairments. An optometrist will be able to direct you in the direction of the desired examination, but only a specialist ophthalmologist can perform the truly comprehensive examination.

Specialist ophthalmologists specialize in various medical fields as well as various eye diseases, including glaucoma and retinitis. The professional and comprehensive examination provides a complete picture of the condition of the eyes, various sensitivities and also prepares the person for the possibility of developing diseases as a result of initial sensitivity.
