Exercises for dry eyes

Even when we are happy we cry. The tears are extremely important for the proper functioning of the eye and for maintaining it, they provide moisture and shielding and the necessity for a smooth passage of the eyelid over the eye with each blink, which adds a new layer of tears.

The main parts that make up the tear:

  1. Water provides moisture . The watery part is secreted from the tear glands found in the eyelids.
  2. Fats , provide shielding and inhibit the evaporation of the watery part, secreted by the meibomian glands found in the eyelashes
  3. Mucus, the mucus layer , allows for a uniform distribution of the other components on the surface of the eye, creating a kind of matrix that "holds" the other components. Mucus is produced by the conjunctiva.
  4. Antibodies , proteins of the immune system that ward off infections

A condition of dry eyes is extremely common, and can express a failure in one of the above systems, and as a result, if there is insufficient production of tears or a malfunction in the production of one of the tear components, we may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  1. Itchy or burning sensation in the eyes
  2. Foreign body sensation in the eye
  3. redness
  4. Blurred vision
  5. sensitivity to light
  6. Excess tears (paradoxically may indicate dry eye)

Sometimes, dry eyes can cause excess tears. This confusing phenomenon is called the lacrimal reflex. It is called that because the lack of moisture supply to the eye causes eye irritation.

The stimulation causes a signal to be sent through the nervous system which causes an increased production of eye shielding, the body tries to compensate for the lack of moisture in the eye with an increased production of tears, similar to the situation when sand gets into our eye and the eye begins to water at a dizzying rate.

It must be remembered that in a situation where there is a malfunction in tear production, the excess tear cannot really compensate for a normal tear since the tear composition is faulty, the excess tear is able to remove particles from the eye but is not able to coat the eye area and remain for a sufficient time.

Exercises for dry eyes, especially those that involve a lot of eyelid movement, are highly recommended for women in the post-menstrual period and for teenagers who watch digital screens for a long time, in these population groups, the phenomenon of dry eyes is more common than in the rest of the population.

What can cause a dry eye condition?

An imbalance in the tear system, an ocular or systemic infectious disease or even a banal cause such as harmful habits such as smoking, wearing contact lenses for a long time or watching screens, air conditioning and other environmental factors that may dry out the eye more quickly and more can occur.

Exercises for dry eyes – examples of conditions that can cause dry eyes:

  1. The natural aging process, especially after menopause.
  2. Eye diseases such as blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids), ectropion or entropion (when the eyelid protrudes outward or inward).
  3. Rheumatological diseases that affect the ability to produce tears such as Scheurgen's syndrome, rheumatic joint disease.
  4. Various medicines such as anti-allergies, diuretics, beta-blockers.

A diagnosis of dry eyes is made by an ophthalmologist and is determined based on the description of your symptoms and an inquiry into the cause of the dryness, whether it is an ocular or systemic disease or whether it is a harmful or environmental habit. After the diagnosis, there are various tests that aim to understand the specific cause of the dryness in order to adapt an exact solution to the cause of the problem.

Treatments for dry eye are divided into symptom treatments for temporary relief of dryness until the harmful factor is removed and dedicated treatments after diagnosing the exact cause of dry eyes if any.

Exercises for dry eyes which focus on blinking correctly and with regular frequency are particularly effective in people whose dry eyes are not caused by an illness but due to prolonged viewing of screens. While watching a digital screen we tend to blink less, thus nourishing the eye with fewer tears. Exercises for dry eyes which Aiming for regular and correct blinking can improve the symptoms of dry eyes and encourage the dispersion of tears on the surface of the eye.

Dry eye drops are the most common generic solution for relieving dry eye symptoms. There are different types of drops and they are over the counter, the rabbi needs to try several different types of drops until finding the ideal type. In general, it is better to use drops that are without preservatives that may cause burning in the eye after prolonged use.

In addition, no matter what the cause of the dry eye, a change in lifestyle can always alleviate and prevent the aggravation of dry eye, reducing screen time, making sure to consume omega 3 in the diet or nutritional supplements, avoiding prolonged stay in a dry, air-conditioned environment.

Dedicated treatments for dry eye are adjusted after diagnosing the exact cause of dry eyes.
